De Soto Falls

De Soto Falls, the hidden gems of Alabama! When I planned my visit I was really skeptical. Frankly speaking, the photographs of any small falls are decisive most of the time. But oh my! I got a pleasant surprise out there.

Near the town of Mentone, De Soto Falls forms from the little river, which is the only river in the USA that flows its entire length atop a mountain named Lookout Mountain.

The water is called the “Outstanding Waters” because due to its quality, almost 15 species are endemic (live in a certain area) to this watershed!

Another interesting fact about this fall is, that it is the first hydroelectric power source for north Alabama.

If you are visiting Huntsville or Chattanooga then don’t miss out on this beauty of Alabama. It is about 1.5 hours of drive from both places. FYI there is a 4$ parking fee.

De Soto Falls has two viewing points, upper and lower. One is easily accessible with gravel paths and staircases, but for the latter one, you might have to lose some calories. From my point of view, the upper side is gorgeous enough 💙💙

You can actually bring your kayak and have a half or full day of adventure trip in this area! There is a small boat rental shop on the premises but you might want to book ahead.

Little River Canyon

First of all, do not follow Google Maps directions to go there. It will take you to the middle of nowhere!! The last 5 miles are literally abandoned….no paved road! 😞😕

If you want to make it a quick stop, Do It. But don’t waste much time here. I have been to three main vista points of this canyon.

Eberhart Point

This is the overlook from where you can have a panoramic view of the entire canyon in a zoomed-out version. There is a small 0.5-mile hiking trail downwards that can give you a closer view of the canyon (2nd picture).

Crow Point Overlook

From Crow Point Overlook, you can have a gorgeous view of the canyon and the river up close and this area is guard-railed, so if you are traveling with kids, that can be a relief!

Graces High Falls

Grace’s High Falls is a distant view of a very small creek, that is also season-based. I went there during the fall season so there was nothing much to see. But the blooming fall colors were eye-shooting!

To go to the actual falls put “Little River Canyon State Park” in your GPS. There you can have a closer look at the falls also there are picnic spots and restroom facilities for having a half-day family picnic tour.

Haque’s EYE

Hippie Hole is a pretty swimming spot in Little River Canyon. The path to get there is short and the canyon is a nice place to swim. Many people use the trail, so the canyon can get crowded

Noccula Falls

Another hidden gem of Alabama is Noccalula Falls. It is not only famous for the falls but it also has several things to offer. Looking for a weekend getaway, book one of two beautiful log cabins, or rent a campsite with full hookups at a very affordable price!

The Black Creek Trail is minutes away from the cabin so you can go hiking, biking, or strolling. You can have a different view of the fall from underneath following an easy hike.

There is a bridge area and on one side of that, you can find a beautiful picnic area to have a cup of coffee in this serenity.

Also unlike others, this campground offers various interesting events year-round. Some of them are the Barbarian Challenge, Christmas At The Falls, Smoke on the Falls, and so on! On these events, the falls come alive with magnificent light shows.
