How to explore Bangkok like a local?

Think like a local. Eat like a local. This is the mantra we love to go by when we visit any destination. If you, as a tourist, seek for things that you are most comfortable with, you are just living your home life somewhere else…now that’s not travel! It may not always be easy to adapt and follow a different culture, but that’s what travel is all about. So, with that, we take you to Bangkok to show you how to explore the iconic city like a local.

Venture beyond the tourist areas

This is the most important step. Make up your mind that you will make local areas a bigger part of your Bangkok itinerary. While popular attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan (Wat Arun) are worth visiting, try to explore neighborhoods away from the main tourist areas. Areas like Thonglor, Ari, and Chinatown offer a more authentic local experience.

Bangkok has an extensive public transportation system that locals use regularly. Take advantage of the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway when in the city. Public buses and tuk tuks are great options too to navigate the city but the roads are always congested. The skytrain and subway will take you anywhere quicker.

Bangkok is known for its vibrant markets, and they are an essential part of local life. Check out the smaller markets like Or Tor Kor Market for some of the most unique, interesting and delicious local cuisines. Bangkok is renowned for its street food scene, and locals often eat at street stalls or local eateries. Most importantly, don’t yuck someone’s yum.

If you are one of those who are always chasing cool cultural experiences, you will love Bangkok and its numerous temples. As they say, not all great things are out in the open, same goes for Bangkok’s temples too.

Your Bangkok itinerary is incomplete without an experience of the floating markets. There are several such markets but Damnoen Saduak Market just hits the right spot. And when exploring the market, eat what the locals eat. This floating market has a number of vendors selling some of the best noms. Fresh ingredients are cooked right in front of you and then there is that vibrant atmosphere.
