Homes in the mountains have been in high demand as city dwellers search for fresh air and access to nature and space. Families looking for outdoor activities and an easier lifestyle have landed in mountain communities such as Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Lake Tahoe, California; and Park City, Utah.

These areas are famous for world-class ski resorts but also offer an array of other outdoor activities in all seasons. There’s also a strong sense of community among full-time residents of many mountain communities, agents said.

But the same thing that draws the skiing and snowboarding set can turn beach lovers off completely: snow.

“Weather conditions can be pretty harsh,” said Julie Faupel, an agent and the owner of Jackson Hole Real Estate & Associates in Jackson, Wyoming.

The right gear goes a long way, she added, but months of bitter temperatures can be trying. In addition, mountain towns can be isolating for those used to a myriad of shopping options and a 24-hour culture.
