যুক্তরাজ্যের  অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় উন্নয়নশীল দেশের শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য নানা বৃত্তি দেয়। এসব বৃত্তি নিয়ে পড়তে পারবেন  বিদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা। তেমনি একটি বৃত্তি ‘রোডস স্কলারশিপ’। সম্পূর্ণ বিনা মূল্যে পড়ার বৃত্তির জন্য বাংলাদেশসহ অন্য দেশের শিক্ষার্থীরাও আবেদন করতে পারবেন।

বিশ্বের অন্যতম প্রাচীন বৃত্তি ‘রোডস স্কলারশিপ’। রোডস বৃত্তি যুক্তরাজ্যের অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়ার জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক বৃত্তি প্রদান প্রকল্প। বৃত্তিটি ১৯০২ সালে চালু করা হয়। ইংরেজ ব্যবসায়ী ও রাজনীতিবিদ সেসিল রোডস এ বৃত্তি চালু করেন। বৃত্তির উদ্দেশ্য ছিল কর্মজীবনে প্রবেশ করতে যাওয়া শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে ভবিষ্যতে নাগরিক নেতৃত্বের গুণাবলি ও নৈতিক সাহস প্রতিষ্ঠিত করা। শুরুতে রোডস বৃত্তিটি কমনওয়েলথ সংস্থাভুক্ত দেশগুলোর (সঙ্গে জার্মানি ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রও ছিল) পুরুষ আবেদন প্রার্থীদের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট করা ছিল। পরে সেটি সবার জন্য উন্মুক্ত করে দেওয়া হয়। প্রাথমিকভাবে নারীদের সুযোগ না দেওয়া, প্রতিষ্ঠাতা রোডসের ইঙ্গ-শ্বেতাঙ্গ আধিপত্যবাদী মনোভাব এবং ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশবাদের সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্টতার কারণে এ বৃত্তি প্রকল্পটি বিতর্কিত ছিল।

রোডস বৃত্তিপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে অন্যতম হলেন পাকিস্তানের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট ওয়াসিম সাজ্জাদ, অস্ট্রেলিয়ার সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী টোনি অ্যাবট, বব হক ও ম্যালকম টার্নবুল, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সাবেক রাষ্ট্রপতি বিল ক্লিনটনসহ একাধিক নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজেতা। বিতর্কিত হওয়ার কারণে বেশ কয়েকজন ব্যক্তি রোডস বৃত্তি প্রত্যাখ্যানও করেছেন।

সুযোগ সুবিধাগুলো—

*সম্পূর্ণ টিউশন ফি মিলবে;

*আবাসন সুবিধা থাকবে;

*উপবৃত্তি হিসেবে বছরে ১৯, ০৯২ পাউন্ড (বাংলাদেশি মুদ্রায় ২৮ লাখ ৬৪ হাজার ১১ টাকা) পাবেন। (১ পাউন্ড সমান ১৫০ টাকা শূন্য ১ পয়সা ধরে, ২৯ মে বিকেলের হিসেবে)

যোগ্যতাগুলো—

*আবেদনকারীর বয়স ১৮ থেকে ২৩ বছর হতে হবে;

*স্নাতকোত্তরের জন্য স্নাতক এবং পিএইচডির জন্য স্নাতকোত্তর পাস হতে হবে;

*ইংরেজি ভাষায় দক্ষ হতে হবে;

*ইংরেজিতে আইইএলটিএসের দক্ষতা সনদ লাগবে।

The Rhodes Scholarship

When different people come together in a shared spirit, exciting new things begin. The Rhodes Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity to join outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. Applications for the next round of Rhodes Scholarships open in June 2024.

The Selection Criteria

There is no such thing as a ‘type’ when considering who gets selected for a Scholarship. In fact the strength of the Scholarship comes from its diversity.

The criteria which determined the first Rhodes Scholars in 1902 still guide us today:

• literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence)
• energy to use one’s talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theatre, and artistic pursuits, particularly where teamwork is involved)
• truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
• moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
